Stone Family Genealogy
Researched and written by Edgar Stone
Deacon Gregory Stone, et al
The origin of the family name was atte Stone, old English for those who lived by a prominent geographic landmark, such as a large stone. The prefix was dropped in the 14th century. The family came from Bromley and Ardleigh in Essex County England. Those living in Essex were relatively free of the Danish influence that was so strong in Yorkshire, when the Danes dominated them in England from 885 to 915. The Stones were yeomen, those who farmed or had some trade for their own benefit, as were 90% of the émigrés to New England from 1630 through 1640, 25,000 of them. The Puritan Revolution in England then stemmed the tide, at least partially.
Deacon Gregory Stone was known to Governor Winthrop before he left England, being mentioned by Winthrop in a note asking the collection of five pounds from him. At the age of 43 he emigrated with his wife and seven of his children, in 1635, settling with his brother Simon, who had preceded him that year on the Good Ship Increase, in Watertown. (and as our mother used to say, "They've been increasing ever since"). That first settlement was in a log cabin, but in the course of years he moved to Cambridge, became prosperous, and built a fine home. He was granted 3000 acres of land in the vicinity of Lincoln, near Lexington. His home was nearby what is now preserved as the Longfellow mansion, which was also Washington's headquarters when he was in Boston. Each of these homes had a large Elm before it, named for the family that occupied the home. It was under the Elm before the Longfellow mansion that Washington took command of the Continental Army. A photo in the genealogy shows the Stone Elm, huge and still standing in 1883. Gregory was active in civic affairs and, with two others, presented the first formal complaint to the General Court protesting government without representation in Parliament. That was in 1664, 100 years before the revolution. The home was eventually bought by Harvard College, and became the site of the Harvard Observatory. He married first, in England, Margaret Garrad, apparently of Norman descent, judging by the name, by whom he had three children, including his eldest child John. He then married a widow, Lydia --- Cooper, who had three children by a prior marriage, one name John, thus Elder John for Gregory's firstborn. Gregory died in 1672, age 80. In a finely detailed will, he left everything to his widow, who survived him.
Elder John accompanied his father to Boston at about age 17. Married in 1639 (he was baptized 31 July 1618), there is no record of his wife's maiden name. They had 10 children and John died in 1683, age 64, survived by his wife. He spent most of his adult life in Sudbury, neighbor to the Treadways (I think there was a Treadway Inn there in later years). Sudbury was then unincorporated, but on his mother's death he succeeded to the home in Cambridge, where he became a member of the General Court and a ruling elder in the Cambridge church. His will left all to his wife.
Nathaniel Stone, born 11 May 1660, son of John, married Sarah White, by whom he had nine children, one being Hezekiah. He settled in what is now Framingham, becoming a selectman, and died there in 1732, age 72, and survived by his wife, to whom he willed some of his possessions and a permanent home.
Hezekiah Stone, born 5 March 1710-11, resided first in Framingham then bought a large farm in Oxford, near Worcester. He was a selectman in Framingham and Oxford, then town assessor in Oxford until 1770. He died there 18 July 1771, age 60. He married about 1735, Ruth Howe, who bore him eight children, the first being Eliphalet. Following his death, his wife married David Bancroft, dying in 1800 when she was 94. The inventory of his will totaled 545 British pounds.
Deacon Eliphalet Stone: Born in Framingham 5 December 1735, he served in several campaigns in the French and Indian war, from 1755 through 1759. Settling first in Warren, Mass., he moved in 1771 to Monadnock Township 4, later Marlboro New Hampshire. There he remained the rest of his life buying and settling farms around Stone Pond. He built a fulling mill at the pond outlet for dressing cloth. He was active in civil, military, and religious affairs, an officer in one of the town militia companies and marched to the relief of fort Ticonderoga in 1777. He was town selectmen for several years, and in 1775-76 was delegate to the 5th Provincial Congress of New Hampshire, held the Exeter. In 1760, he married Lydia Goddard, by whom he had 10 children, the 4th being Shubael. He died 9 February 1817, age 81. His wife died 18 March 1821, age 83.
Shubael Stone, born 14 December 1766, served as a young man in the Continental Army, then settled in a portion of land deeded to him by his father, where he remained the rest of his life. He was town moderator for several years, then tax collector and in 1809 was chosen a member of the first school committee. In 1791, he married Polly Rogers, by whom he had 13 children, the 12th being Benjamin. He died 21 June 1823, age 56. His wife married secondly, as his second wife, her first husband's uncle, Hezekiah Stone, and died 18 March 1850, age 80.
Benjamin Franklin Stone, born 6 April 1814, when 14 years old was apprenticed to his brother, Stillman Stone, to learn the carpentry trade. After coming-of-age,
He started business for himself, and in 1839 went into the building business in Boston, residing in Newton and Roxbury for the next 10 years. In the gold fever of 1849, he went to California where he engaged in building. Wiped out by the panic of 1857, he returned to his family in 1859 "in low condition". In 1862, he enlisted for service in the Civil War, although he was beyond the age for military service of 45, serving 10 months before discharge. He died 1 April 1882, age 68. He married in 1837, Lucy Barker, born 22 January 1813 in Malden mass. She survived to the advanced age of 92, dying in Chelsea, 1 March 1903. They had five children, the eldest, George Franklin.
George Franklin Stone, born in Marlborough, New Hampshire., July 1838, was a soldier in the Civil War, enlisting 6 September 1861 in company D, 22nd mass volunteers and serving three years until discharged 17 October 1864. He was an accountant, employed for many years by Mason & Hamlin of Boston. He died in Boston, 3 January 1902, age 64 and survived by his wife, Josephine Elwell, whom he married about 1882. They had 10 children: Ellen: 1 May 1883, Mary: 18 October 1884, Ruth: 23 March 1886, George: 27 July 1887, Dorothy: 13 August 1889, Amy: 27 January 1891, Ward (husband of Linda Slack Stone): 9 March 1892, Raymond: 25 October 1893, Otis: 4 April 1895, Roy: 10 January 1899. The eldest 19 when the father died, the youngest not yet three.
